In 2013, the Roma Education Fund supported the production of the documentary Judgment in Hungary, which closely following the lengthy trial of four defendants in what became known as the Gyöngyöspata serial murder case.

As part of its broader commitment to social justice and combating stereotypes, the Roma Education Fund was convinced by the film’s potential to raise awareness among the general public about the violence that Roma face from extreme-right forces in Hungary and across Europe.

Echoing such classics on the Civil Rights struggle like Into the Heat of the Night and To Kill a Mockingbird, the documentary follows the tense and sometimes absurd 167-day trial to its conclusion.

After debuting at IDFA in late 2013, Judgment in Hungary has been playing on the documentary festival circuit, collecting awards and prizes for its director, Eszter Hajdu, and her team.

Among the latest awards bestowed upon Judgment in Hungary is the Grand Jury Award at this weekend’s London Open City Docs Fest, and we would like to congratulate Eszter on this achievement and to wish her further success as Judgment screens across the world.

REF is only Roma NGO to support the production of this explosive film that lifts the lid on hate crimes in Hungary and exposes the march of the far-right in Europe.
