Commission for Studying Roma Slavery in Romania

The Centre for Roma Studies with the support of the Roma civil society and the National Agency for Roma has set up the „Commission for Studying Roma Slavery in Romania”.

The Commission, composed of 12 Roma and non-Roma intellectuals, has been operating since 01/03/2007 till the end of 2007 when as a result of their lobbying activity a Final report will be released, both scientific and interdisciplinary, containing „Conclusions and Recommendations” on educational and legislative repercussions.

REF team visits Albania and meets the Minister of Education, development agencies and Roma civil society to discuss progress on the inclusion of Roma children in education

A REF team composed of Alexandre Marc, Executive Director of REF and Marius Taba, Program Officer, visited Albania from June 25 to 29 to monitor the REF financed project implemented by UNICEF and the Roma NGO Amarodrom.

REF team visits Moldova and meets the Minister of Education, the Head of the Parliamentary Commission on Education in the Parliament and also members of civil society and development agencies

A team, composed of Alexandre Marc, REF Executive Director and Marius Taba,, REF Program Officer, visited Moldova to discuss possible development of a REF supported program.
The REF team was accompanied by Ruslan Stanga and Marin Ala, head of Ograda V Noastra and Tarna Rom, the beneficiaries of REF first grants for Moldova.

The team met with Victor Tvircun, Minister of Education and Youth, and Mr Viktor Stepaniuc, head of parliamentary commission for education.

Meeting of the Informal Contact Group of Intergovernmental Organizations and Istitutions on Roma, Sinti and Travellers

Deputy Director of the Roma Education Fund, Rumyan Russinov, participated on a meeting of the Informal Contact Group of Intergovernmental Organizations and Institutions on Roma, Sinti and Travellers held in Brussels on 11 June 2007.
The meeting was chaired by Dr. Detlev Rein, Head of Division MII4 (National Minorities) of the Federal Ministry of the Interior of the Federal Republic of Germany.

REF Board meeting in Budapest, Hungary

June 14, 2007

The Board of the Roma Education Fund met on June 14, 2007 in REF headquarters. The REF Board approved 10 projects and rejected 16 projects.

The the approved projects were for Macedonia (1), Bulgaria (5), Serbia (2), Slovakia (1), and Hungary (1). The Board also approved two reimbursable grants for Hungary.

The Board approved a new fundraising strategy and reviewed the Croatia country assessment and `REF working directions documents and cleared the report for discussions with the Governments and the civil society.

REF participates in the European Foundation Center 18th Annual General Assembly and Conference

June 2-3 2007, Madrid

REF Executive Director, Alexandre Marc participated in the EFC annual conference in Madrid on June 2 and 3. The conference brought together about 600 people among which the representatives of all the most influential foundations in Europe.

The theme of this meeting was “the New Challenges for Global Philanthropy”. The foundations financing REF were present at the meeting and the REF contacted many new organizations to presents its work and achievements.

European Commission Internship for Young Roma University Graduates

The European Commission in cooperation with the Open Society Institute, Roma Participation Program, is announcing the second Call for applications for 2007 for Young Roma Graduates from all new member states (excluding Cyprus and Malta), Croatia, F.Y.R.O.M., Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro.

The internship program will run for 5 months starting with the 1st October 2007. For more information please find enclosed more information about application procedures and eligibility criteria.

Campaign the Forum of European Roma Young People (FERYP) within the framework of the Council of Europe “All different –all equal campaign” are organizing the “Roma are Europe:” All different all equal – Summer Camp and Roma Youth Festival. It is a follow-up of the study session in 2005 “Roma Youth – Situation and Perspectives 10 years after the RAXI Campaign” and the Conference “Romaphobia and Anti-Gypsyism – old phenomenon and new challenges in Europe” and the study session “Campaigning for Roma Rights and Equality of Opportunities”.
